Photographer and author Rachael McKenna (formerly Hale) is one of the world's most popular and successful photographers. Secret Garden

English photographer Charlotte Bird's beautiful and unique fairy photographs have been described by some as nostalgic, haunting, magical and at times whimsical. They have captured the hearts of many fairy lovers in the UK and are now winging their way towards many other far flung places around the world. Charlotte re-visited the beck in Cottingley, West Yorkshire, England, in 2005. It is the famous site where the first fairy photographs were taken nearly a century ago by young cousins Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright. Charlotte's fairies, captured in the same spot, can be seen in her series "Tales from Cottingley." Her more recent work of "common house fairies" at play and repose are beautifully lit by candle and evening window light.

Ellen Stouffer's paintings are strongly interwoven with the fabric of her life. "They reflect that part of me that I describe as 'gossamer wings' - my love of the simple beauty that you can see in everyday things, like the flowers in my garden or a delicate bit of lace," says Ellen. But at a deeper level, her watercolor paintings are a special part of her abiding faith that she hopes to share with others. Bible verses that express God's teachings of love, faith, gentleness, peace, patience and hope are incorporated into scenes from everyday life. "I delight in life as an artist," adds Ellen. "Every day seems better, filled with more hope, more joy, and a greater appreciation for family, friends, and the miraculous gifts from God."

Life's a Gas

Western cartoonist Ben Crane has been expressing his unique view of the cowboy life through art for as long as he can remember. Ben was a professional illustrator before becoming a cartoonist. Cowboy poet Bryn Thiessen says about his friend, "Working on local ranches and being involved in various equine endeavors gave Ben a barn full of memories and experiences to draw on. Now if a poet's mind works in rhyme, and a musician pictures notes, then you'll find in Ben's mind a blank with nothing wrote." Thiessen credits the Canadian wind on the Alberta flatlands where Ben was raised with forming the artist's psyche, as well as the unique slant to his forehead. Although most notorious for his cartoons, Ben says, "I do serious stuff once in a while." He is a founding member of Cowboy Cartoonists International, and he continues to live in Canada, where, he says, "The coffee's always on."

Cowgirlin'

Living all over the world with her family, Nancy Cawdrey was fortunate to be exposed to a variety of artistic traditions throughout her childhood. Later, she spent a total of seven years studying art in Paris and Britain. At first she worked primarily in watercolors, but her fascination with texture and color led her to discover the vivid effects she could achieve through painting on silk, a technique that has been used in China for thousands of years. "Whatever medium I'm working in," the artist explains, "I like to mix color on the surface of the painting, giving the work more immediacy and spontaneity - what I call spirited painting. On silk, I found that I can really float brilliant color with spirit and gusto." She is best known for her paintings capturing the spirit of the "New West." For more than two decades, Cawdrey has lived in the Flathead Lake region of northwest Montana, where the lush terrain and placid waters serve as inspiration for her work.

of Cats

Laurel Burch (1945-2007) and her artwork have been a phenomenon since she began making jewelry by hand and selling it on the streets of San Francisco in the late 1960's. She was a single mother on welfare just struggling to get by, but over the next forty years, she became an internationally famous artist and designer with an instantly recognizable palette and style. Laurel's vivid and vibrantly colored images are whimsical and timeless artifacts from a mythical world of her own creation. Inspired by her travels around the globe, her work evokes the flavors of many far off places, yet at the same time feels distinctly homegrown, unmistakably hers - both primitive and modern. As a self-taught painter, Laurel saw herself as a folk artist, telling stories. On some level, her work has always been about bringing different cultures together, and about our connection with the earth and all living things, ideas that have only increased in relevance today.

Sherri Buck Baldwin grew up in her mother's gardens and learned to observe the flowers and plants cultivated there, as well as the creatures that inhabited the secret places in the garden beds. Her passion for drawing, combined with a life-long love of gardening, led Sherri to a career in illustrating the little miracles of the natural world. Surrounded by the fertile farmlands of Wisconsin, Sherri "paints" her own landscape with just the right combination of flowers to attract the birds and butterflies she wishes to depict in her artwork.
